TEDxRC² Guest blog: Inspiration from a deaf frog
A few weeks ago, I was asked to write a guest blog for TEDxRC². No guidelines were given regarding content; the organizing committee was interested to hear what younger participants were expecting from this event.
Let me introduce myself shortly; I am a 24-year-old female student from the Netherlands with a passion for cooking. One year ago, I got the amazing opportunity to become a national board member for the Netherlands Red Cross. From this position, I have come to learn more about the work of the Red Cross and Red Crescent.
TEDx is about ideas worth spreading and inspiring others. And I think that if there is one organization that inspires, it’s the Red Cross and Red Crescent, with their amazing work worldwide. I do not want to talk about the importance of humanitarian work here; I would like to share how I think that we, as society in general, should move forward and do more, reach further in the future.
In my opinion, a vital element of multiplying the power of humanity is engaging the youth. I hate to use clichés, but we are and will be the future. We all live in this world, but especially as youth we not only can but have to make a move; do something in order to keep it a world worth living in.
During the last years I have met so many amazing and inspiring young individuals, with great ideas, creative minds, perseverance and never-ending energy. Young people can think without boundaries, they dare to dream big, and can see beyond obstacles.
To illustrate this I would like to quote an inspiring story that I recently heard and believe is worth sharing.
There once was a bunch of tiny frogs who arranged a climbing competition. The goal was to reach the top of a very high tower.
A big crowd had gathered around the tower to see the race and cheer-on the contestants.
The race began. No one in the crowd really believed the tiny frogs would reach the top of the tower.
Throughout the race you heard, “Oh, way too difficult!” “They will never make it to the top!” “Not a chance they will succeed!” and “The tower is too high!”
The tiny frogs began collapsing, one by one - except for those who, in a fresh attempt, were climbing higher and higher. The crowd continued to yell, “It is too difficult! No one will make it!”
More tiny frogs got tired and gave up. But one continued to climb higher and higher. This one refused to give up!
At the end of the race, all had given up climbing the tower except for the one tiny frog who, after a big effort, was the only one who reached the top.
All of the other frogs wanted to know how this one frog managed to do it. They asked him how he had found the strength to succeed and reach his goal.
It turned out that the winning frog was deaf, and therefore hadn’t heard any of the discouraging words. He focused on his goal, and wouldn’t be set back by obstacles.
I strongly believe that everyone has the ability to do amazing things, and I’m encouraging everyone to get the most out of themselves and others, and do more.
Together we can take the first steps towards a more humane and just world.
I wish everyone a very inspiring Sunday!

TEDx preparations can be tough… on everyone.
Here, a bored jack russell (and adored pup of yours truly) puts up with some late-night and last-minute paperwork. Less than one week to go now! If only the dog knew how to type…
Speaking of dogs, here’s a great song by Nellie McKay featured on TED.com, called “The Dog Song”. Guess it’s time to take the litle guy for a walk!

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for 27 November to watch our webcast!
Thanks, Anna Nelson, TEDxRC² curator
